Hiding dirty laundry
Why do we hide our dirty laundry?
I had sent my boys up to their room two days in a row to grab their dirty laundry. And they came down with barely anything.
“We got it all, Mom.”
I became suspicious, so I went up to check their room. The above picture is what I found.
I could have chosen to yell at them, but the truth is we all hide our dirty laundry.
Which of course, is so silly if we don’t bring our dirty laundry down to the washing machine, then we would never have clean clothes.
We do the same thing when we refuse to bring our dirty laundry/sins to the Lord. Stop hiding dirty laundry.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1John 1:9, ESV)
I am so grateful that Christ is faithful in forgiving our sins. It’s almost unbelievable that our only obligation is to confess our sins and agree with God and He washes us clean.
“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” (James 5:16, ESV)
Then God’s Word shows us even more good news that when we confess to other Christians our sins and pray from a righteous heart, then we will be healed. Wow. Why in the world would we ever try to hide our dirty laundry?
Why do you hide your sin?
I have an inkling in my case it’s pride and shame those are my twin issues keeping me from choosing the only wise route of confession.
I know I want to stop hiding dirty laundry.
Prayer for you and me: Lord Jesus, we’re sorry for not bringing our dirty laundry to You. Your finished work on the cross is more than enough to heal our every need. We confess our sins known and unknown to You. We confess of any shame or pride that hinders our desire to fully expose our hearts to You. Help us to immediately recognize, reject, and repent of our sins as they occur. In the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
