I saw this beautiful ornate shelf adorned with elaborate and intricate carvings. It sat upon two metal shelf holders that shone in the light. I thought about what I could put on the shelves and where it might fit in my house.
It’s then I felt a little uneasy and waited for God to speak.
“The shelf is only as good as what it’s anchored into. A decision is only as good as what it’s anchored into.”
“Ugh.”
I looked back behind the shelving to see what it was anchored into. A crumbling mess of a wall that no longer had any straight edges to attach to. Trying to anchor it to the wall would be useless. The shelf no longer had any purpose if it couldn’t sustain anything on it.
“Teach me Lord, I’m listening.”
“ So many times, you spend your efforts in decorating and planning for the future and not on anchoring your understanding in the Word of God. You must have a firm platform before you add to it.”

I think what He is trying to say here is that we shouldn’t make any plans when we haven’t taken the time to anchor our decision making to the Word of God
It’s like decorating and planning for the next greatest thing in my house instead of cleaning the floors or wiping down counters. If we don’t have our house clean, if someone came to visit, would they even see the decorations, or would they just see the mess? We waste our efforts.
“This hope [this confident assurance] we have as an anchor of the soul [it cannot slip and it cannot break down under whatever pressure bears upon it]—a safe and steadfast hope that enters within the veil [of the heavenly temple, that most Holy Place in which the very presence of God dwells],” (Hebrews 6:19, AMP)
Prayer for you and me: Lord, help us lay down our plans and ask for Your guidance. We don’t want our efforts to be wasted on our own understanding. We want to be rooted and anchored in You. Create in us a firm foundation, steadfast in the heart of God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
